A new and effective tip for bulldog parents!

A new and effective tip for bulldog parents!
December 16, 2022

For brachycephalic dogs that are having issues with regurgitation secondary to Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome, either before or after airway corrective surgeries, offering water from a standing (elevated) position can be quite a miraculous and helpful adjunct to your home care.

Most bulldogs will benefit from eating and drinking with their food and water elevated. The food bowl can be elevated and tilted at a 45-degree angle. You can create a little ramp for them to stand on so that their body position is at 45 degrees. And, you can make sure that they drink water slowly by purchasing a water bottle with a spout at any feed store, pet store, or online.

When bulldogs eat and drink quickly, and fill their stomachs too fast, they will be prone to regurgitation and vomiting.  So slow it down and be prepared for a little miracle!

Surgical correction of their airway disorders often decreases this tendency, but may not eliminate it. Regurgitation and vomiting can unfortunately lead to aspiration pneumonia and acid damage from the low pH of the stomach acids.

Please call for a consult if you think your flat-faced pup is a candidate for airway corrective surgeries.

Be sure to check out our Bulldog & Brachycephalic Health and Wellness page for even more information.
