LEPTOSPIROSIS OUTBREAK IN DOGS

Dear Clients and Friends:

Here is the latest alert for our region regarding the contagious bacterial disease Leptospirosis. Please read the entire health alert for full details.

The important "take home" point is that if your dog goes to dog parks, day care, boarding, or is exposed to wildlife (in particular urine contaminated soil and water) please contact your veterinarian and get an appointment for a Leptospirosis vaccine.

The Zoetis Leptospirosis vaccine ("Vanguard L4") is our preferred brand as it has the backing of the very best vaccine manufacturer and a proven safety track record. Dogs and puppies older than 6 weeks of age can be given a first dose, and then a booster must be given 3-4 weeks later. It will then need to be annually boosted.

This is a serious and possibly zoonotic (cross infection to humans) contagious disease and the current outbreak is likely to get worse before it gets better.

And, just FYI, all three of my dogs are vaccinated.

Sincerely,
